Josef Grassi
(Vienna c. 1758–1838 Dresden) Portrait of Eleonora Baroness Sörgel von Sorgenthal, née Countess Seeau (d. 1810), signed and dated Grassi 1797, oil on canvas, 81 x 62 cm, framed
Provenance: private collection, Graz; sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 20 March 1995, lot 152. Josef Grassi was an enormously successful portraitist. In Thieme-Becker he is praised for “his rare sense of feminine charm” and for creating “beautiful, lively appearances”. In Vienna and subsequently in Warsaw, Grassi was the preferred portraitist of the courts and the higher aristocracy. One of his most important patronesses was Duchess Wilhelmine of Sagan. – Countess Eleonore of Seeau came from an old noble family in Upper Austria and in 1796 married Konrad Baron Sörgel von Sorgenthal, who died in 1805. Her elegant and expressive portrait is a perfect example of Grassi’s courtly style.
